TERRE HAUTE —
Investigation continues into a fire believed to be arson in a restroom building early Sunday at Collett Park on the city’s north side.
Detective Troy Davis of the Terre Haute Police Department said it is believed someone set the fire shortly before it was noticed around 12:30 a.m. by a person who was inside the nearby park pavilion.
Davis said the witness was decorating the pavilion for an early-morning baby shower when he noticed flames in the restroom building and called 911. Police were nearby and were soon on the scene.
On Monday, the restroom building was surrounded by yellow caution tape, and it showed heavy smoke damage around the doors and at the top of the roof.
Multiple telephone calls requesting information about damage to the building were made by the Tribune-Star to Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Director Eddie Bird; none of the calls were returned.
