Fire hits motel office near Brazil I-70 exit

Brazil — A hotel fire stalled traffic near the intersection of Indiana 42 at 59 Friday afternoon.

The ash and rubble remained smoking at 3 p.m., as firefighters continued pouring water on the Knights Inn, where a fire occurred in the office building about 1 p.m.

Clay County Sheriff Mike Heaton had traffic blocked off in front of the hotel, which is located at 935 W. Indiana 42 immediately east of the intersection with Indiana 59, near Brazil’s Interstate 70 exit.

Both Heaton and Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Tom Champion said the incident will be investigated.

“The cause will be investigated Monday by the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office,” Champion said, standing in a parking lot drenched with dirty water. The fire’s point of origin and cause were still undetermined Friday afternoon.

“There were no injuries. Everyone was able to exit the structure,” Champion said,

Fire departments from the City of Brazil, Centerpoint, Van Buren and Posey townships all assisted in fighting the fire, he said.

A man identified by firefighters as the hotel’s owner declined to comment and refused to identify himself. According to information provided by the Brazil City Fire Department, the property is owned by Chirag Enterprises Inc.
