Although many come from places far from the Wabash Valley, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology students showed again Wednesday they care about the people of their temporary home.
On Wednesday, the Cecil T. Lobo Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers at Rose contributed more than $1,000 to help the neediest people of the Terre Haute area through the Tribune-Star Christmas Basket Fund.
Their contribution, presented by chapter representatives Samantha Springer, Adam Carlson, John Munson and Anne Pierce, pushed the total basket fund to more than $20,000.
“I was surprised how much the students donated,” said Pierce, a sophomore whose home is in Springfield, Mo. “I think Rose students really like giving to charitable causes.”
The total contribution from the ASCE students was $1,158.60. For several years, Rose civil engineering students have worked to raise money for the annual Christmas basket fund, which will provide meals for 600 needy families this holiday season.
“Every year it’s such a great addition to the fund,” said B.J. Riley, publisher of the Tribune-Star, who accepted the student’s check along with Beth Tevlin of the Wabash Valley Community Foundation, which is providing receipts for those making the tax-deductible donations.
Contributions to the annual basket fund are running a little short of expectations this year, Riley said, adding he remains optimistic the $23,000 goal can still be reached in the next few days.
The money donated by the Rose-Hulman ASCE students was raised through direct cash contributions from Rose faculty, staff and students, said Carlson, a senior from Brownsburg. He and Munson, a junior from Bloomington, Ill., hit up professors and administrators for donations while Pierce and Springer, a sophomore from Dallas, Texas, focused on student donations.
“Once you get into it, you begin to realize how much you enjoy doing something for a good cause,” Carlson said.
The food baskets, which are delivered by volunteers on the morning of Christmas Eve, include ham, vegetables, dinner rolls, milk and pumpkin pie. To promote literacy, each basket also contains a book for each child in the household.
The Salvation Army, Baesler’s Market, B&B Foods and Boo’s Crossroads Cafe are once again helping in the annual effort. Basket fund donations can be mailed or delivered in person to the Tribune-Star Christmas Basket Fund, 222 S. Seventh St., Terre Haute, IN 47807.
