Prairie Creek Park getting $85K upgrade

TERRE HAUTE —

Work has started on an $85,000 project to upgrade Prairie Creek Park, a project slated to be largely completed and dedicated on Sept. 29, said Kara Kish, assistant superintendent of the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department.

Next week, workers will remove an old tennis court and install a new tennis court. Part of the existing tennis court will be converted into a basketball court.

The work will be done in five phases, with three phases done this year.

Work includes installing a new playground system, two sets of swings plus benches. Additional work includes placing three new covered picnic benches, installing a shelter, updating the drinking fountain and grading and rocking paths and parking areas.

The last two phases include adding a bridge over a hilly area to allow access to a future splash pad area — a wet play area without standing water. The last two phases will not be done until 2015 or 2016, Kish said.

“That is a large financial project,” Kish said of the splash pad.

“Our goal is to replace and upgrade all of the playground sites in the next five to seven years,” Kish added.

The design of the park project was done by J3 Concepts, a Terre Haute company, Kish said.
