Rain today or dry for several more days, meteorologist says

TERRE HAUTE — Unless rain comes this morning, Terre Haute can expect another dry week ahead.

Meteorologist Joseph Nield of the National Weather Service said Saturday afternoon that potential thunderstorms that evening into this morning represent the best chance of precipitation for the immediate future.

“Unfortunately, that seems to be our best shot until late in the week,” he said, noting Thursday and Friday each brings a paltry 20 percent chance of rain.

Temperatures should remain in the 90s through next weekend, he added, noting another dome of high pressure is moving into the area, bringing clear skies full of sunshine.

Meanwhile, the drought continues.

Nield said the service’s gauge at the Terre Haute International Airport recorded “trace” precipitation Thursday. Tuesday the gauge recorded 0.14 inch of precipitation, bringing July’s total to 0.59 inch. Since Jan. 1, Terre Haute has received only 13.12 inches of precipitation, down nearly 15 inches from the normal amount of 28 inches by this time of the year, he said.
