Pink lined the office walls as volunteers streamed in, ready for another year of the fight against breast cancer.
Sunday afternoon, volunteers began signing up for the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure inside the Wabash Valley affiliate’s office inside Meadows Shopping Center. Shirts, bags and other collectibles were ready for purchase, part of the organization’s ongoing efforts to cure the disease.
Lorrie Heber, chairwoman for this year’s race, said more than 225 volunteers participate each year, working to host the race, which draws some 3,000 to Terre Haute.
“It takes a lot of volunteers to put on the Race for the Cure,” she said Sunday afternoon.
This year’s event will be Sept. 29 at the Indiana State University Hulman Memorial Stadium, with participants finishing at the 50-yard line.
For the first 13 years, the event was hosted at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College before moving to Terre Haute’s downtown area the last few, Heber said.
While the downtown location added greater visibility, traffic was an issue, and the group missed the “village atmosphere” from the college. The move to the stadium is hoped to combine the best of both, she noted.
Jay Jensen attended the afternoon orientation, signing up for his first year as an official volunteer. His wife, Patti, is a longtime volunteer and coordinator for the race, he said.
“I think it’s a worthy cause,” the 67-year-old retiree said. With 45 years of retail experience culminating in the management of Osco Drug Store, Jensen remarked that his mother-in-law was a victim of breast cancer, making the disease “near and dear” to his own heart.
Heber said one out of every eight women will face breast cancer at some point, as will some men.
“Breast cancer is best dealt with when it’s caught early,” she said, citing mammograms as a key to prevention.
But women throughout the Wabash Valley have a hard time affording mammograms, and among the projects supported by Race for the Cure funds is provision to those in need, she said.
This year the group hopes to raise $112,000, aiming to bring in about $60,000 from corporate sponsors and $40,000 in registration fees.
“And we’re right on target for meeting that,” she said.
In addition to the Race for the Cure, the Wabash Valley affiliate will host “Pink Ladies Nights” at the Crossroads Dragway on Aug. 3, Sept. 7 and Oct. 5. A golf outing is planned for Aug. 12 at the Turkey Run Golf Course, and a bass fishing tournament will be conducted Aug. 25 at Lake Monroe.
Abby Floyd, this year’s volunteer coordinator, said she’s helped in the past, but this will be her first turn to help chair the event.
“It’s good to show support for the community,” she said, adding that funds raised at the local event stay local.
