Conservation officers arrest three in connection with stolen ATV

Indiana Conservation Officers have arrested three Knox County men in connection with a stolen off-road vehicle, according to a Department of Natural Resources news release.

Christopher R. Roark, 21, Sandborn, Wendell D. Stewart, 22, Sandborn, and Damond W. Roark, Jr., 19, Bicknell, face charges after an incident that occurred in southeastern Sullivan County on Tuesday night.

Conservation officers, while patrolling at Black Beauty’s Bear Run coal mine near Pleasantville, said they spotted an off-road vehicle occupied by three men arrive at a car parked in a remote area off of County Road 900 East. The three men fled when officers attempted to detain them on suspicion of trespassing. A chase was abandoned when police decided the pursuit was unsafe.

Later that evening, a nearby landowner reported a suspicious vehicle in the area. Indiana Conservation officers, the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department, the Indiana State Police and the Linton Police Department all responded to the complaint.

Police found two males, Christopher R. Roark and Wendell Stewart, in a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier. They were arrested and transported to the Sullivan County Jail. Damond W. Roark Jr., the third suspect in the incident, was found the following day and arrested.

The stolen off-road vechile was found Wednesday morning in a field near the Greene-Sullivan County line. Officers learned that the ORV had recently been stolen from a storage barn near Pleasantville.

Christopher R. Roark faces four charges in Sullivan County:  resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, a class-D felony; theft/receiving stolen property, also a class-D felony; criminal recklessness, a class-A misdemeanor; and reckless driving, a class-B misdemeanor.

Stewart faces two Sullivan County charges: theft/receiving stolen property, a class-D felony, and resisting law enforcement, a class-A misdemeanor.

Damond W. Roark Jr. faces two Sullivan County charges: theft/receiving stolen property, a class-D felony, and resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, also a class-D felony.
