Suspect in fire arrested on drug-related charges

TERRE HAUTE — A man suspected of causing a fire in a camper on South Seventh Street has been arrested on drug-related charges.

John F. Kirkendall, 36, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 3 on Tuesday where Judge David Bolk found probable cause for his arrest on felony charges of manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine and resisting law enforcement.

Arson investigator Norm Loudermilk testified that Kirkendall was seen by witnesses running from a Nov. 17 fire scene in the 700 block of South Seventh Street. That fire was the result of a meth-lab explosion, Loudermilk said, and investigators found several precursors for the clandestine manufacture of methamphetamine.

Loudermilk said that on Monday, he located Kirkendall outside a residence in the 1100 block of South Seventh Street. He said Kirkendall tossed a baggie from his pocket and fled, but was captured a short distance away by Loudermilk.

Testing on the baggie revealed the presence of methamphetamine.

After determining that Kirkendall had been released from prison recently and was on parole, the judge set his bail at $75,000 cash only.
