Health Coalition hosting health fair today

Takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

TERRE HAUTE — The Minority Health Coalition of Vigo County is hosting Getting Healthy for the Holidays community health and fitness fair today.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Booker T. Washington Community Center at 13th Street and College Ave. The health fair will be in the gymnasium on the center’s main level. Free parking will be available adjacent to the building on the south side.

The event is free to the community. At least one door prize will be awarded each hour to someone in attendance. Door prizes include gift certificates from Baesler’s, Sam’s Club, Homey’s and Mary Kay.

In addition, everyone who comes to the event will receive a $5 certificate from Baesler’s, which can be used for food or gasoline.

Dinah Farrington, MHCVC executive director/program coordinator said: “The holidays are a very stressful and busy time of year. We, the MHCVC, are presenting this health fair to help everyone get a healthy start with an opportunity for free health screenings, information and education, and a free gift. What better way to start the holiday season than with a healthy body, mind and spirit?”

Some of the local providers who will be at the health fair are:  The WILL Center, Sam’s Club, Siebenmorgen Cancer Center of Regional Hospital, Union Hospital, Planned Parenthood, the Vigo County Health Department, Hamilton Center, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, CHANCES for Indiana Youth, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Smoke Free Indiana, the Area 7 Agency on Aging, Walgreens, CODA, Celebrate Recovery, Alanon, the Maple Center, La Leche League and Zumba instructor.

Diabetes screening, blood pressure checks, vision screening and cancer screenings will be offered free of charge. Health and nutrition information also will be offered. Flu shots will be available for a $20 cash-only charge.
