Hearing set for Tuesday on new police station

TERRE HAUTE — A public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday concerning plans for a new Terre Haute police headquarters.

The hearing, conducted by the Terre Haute Redevelopment Commission, will consider funding for the proposed project, which is expected to replace the current police headquarters at 12th Street and Wabash Avenue with a new building.

The meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Board of Public Works conference room on the first floor of City Hall.

Construction costs for the new facility are expected to be about $4.5 million, city officials have said. The Redevelopment Commission is expected to discuss issuing bonds not to exceed $5.5 million to cover construction and all other costs associated with the project.

The bonds would be paid off using property tax revenue generated within the city’s downtown Tax Increment Finance (TIF) district, said Cliff Lambert, executive director of the Department of Redevelopment.

The Terre Haute Police Department moved from City Hall to a former Old National Bank building at 12th and Wabash in 2004. The city purchased the building and surrounding property last year from ONB for $100,000.
