Standoff ends in death

6-hour ordeal ends when police find suspect dead in Terre Haute home

TERRE HAUTE — A six-hour standoff on Terre Haute’s north side ended Friday evening as police discovered a man dead inside a house.

The streets around the 4000 block of North 13 1⁄2 Street were blocked by Terre Haute Police Department squad cars for much of the day, as the man remained holed up inside a residence.

The man was discovered dead inside the home about 7 p.m.

The man is believed to have committed suicide during the stand-off, but Det. Troy Davis said Friday evening that few details were known at that time. Davis confirmed the incident began shortly after 1 p.m.

“It’s still under investigation,” he said, adding the coroner’s office will determine whether to conduct a toxicology test.

The man had reportedly posted a Facebook message indicating he would shoot himself, police, or anyone else who attempted to enter the property.

According to the county’s property records, the home is owned jointly by Cynthia Brown and Theresa Hughes, both of whom were identified as being present by neighbors at the scene.

Crowds of neighbors remained in the street watching for most of the day, as police made them leave the homes surrounding the property.

Complaints were common and ongoing throughout the ordeal as residents told police they had to go to work or return to their homes for food or clothing.

Canisters of tear gas were thrown into the house at about 6 p.m., with a breaching team sent in about 6:37 p.m.

Police searched the inside of the home and upon exiting the residence a woman near the home came toward the crowd of neighbors screaming, “He’s dead! He’s dead!”

Davis said police were to conduct a search of the house Friday evening.
