TERRE HAUTE — Due to extremely dry, near-drought conditions, the Vigo County Commissioners are enacting a countywide burn ban, said Dr. Dorene G. Hojnicki, director of the Vigo County Emergency Management Agency. The ban went into effect at noon today and will remain effect until noon June 22, Hojnicki said. The burn ban prohibits campfires and recreational fires unless enclosed in a fire ring with dimensions of 23 inches in diameter and 10 inch high or higher. It also prohibits the burning of debris, such as timber and vegetation, including construction debris. Open buring of any kind using fuel such as wood or other combustible matter is also prohibited. Charcoal from grills is permitted, but charcoal must be thoroughly extinquished after cooking.
