Bemis union votes

Announcement on proposed contract vote expected at 6 p.m. today

TERRE HAUTE — Members of Workers United Local 1426 poured into the National Guard Armory on Maple Avenue Thursday afternoon to vote on a proposed contract that could end a 23-day strike.

More than 700 employees at Bemis Co.’s Polyethylene Packaging Division plant in Terre Haute have been off work since a July 21 strike began in protest over the issues of reduced health benefits and temporary workers.

At 6 p.m. Friday, an announcement is expected on the outcome of the contract vote.

“We have nothing to say until when the vote is counted,” said union spokesman Bill Kirby.

Bemis spokeswoman Kristi Pavletich told the Tribune-Star on Thursday that the company had no statement to make about negotiations or the union vote.

Meanwhile, a picket line continues in front of Bemis Co.’s main gate on North Fruitridge Avenue. Pickets carried signs Thursday with messages such as “Go home scab labor” and “Honk for the Union.”

A union news release stated members of Local 1426 voted down the company’s final contract offer in July based primarily on the two issues of health insurance and temporary workers. Workers United stated the company wanted to require employees and their spouses to submit to medical testing and blood tests as a prerequisite for health insurance coverage.

Workers United, SEIU is a union of 150,000 people in the U.S. and Canada who work in the manufacturing, distribution, laundry, food service, hospitality, gaming, apparel and textile industries.
