Project HOPE limits services to Terre Haute

Spay/neuter program lacks funds to serve entire county

TERRE HAUTE — Due to budgetary constraints, low-income pet owners who live outside the Terre Haute city limits will have to wait until next year to take part in a free spay-neuter service from Project HOPE.

Project director Dawn Lorey said the program is funded by the city of Terre Haute and Vigo County. The city pays $25,000 annually into the program, while Vigo County pays $5,000 annually.

“While the county’s $5,000 budget is appreciated, it isn't enough to cover the demand throughout Vigo County,” Lorey said. “Although 116 animals will be altered this year [outside the city limits], there are many more waiting for help,” she added.

Lorey said the county “still has pockets of poverty that have a lot more breeding animals. The county includes West Terre Haute, near Seelyville and around North Terre Haute. We are relying on the city and county to help with this project.”

Lorey said that while no more spaying or neutering will be offered to county residents outside of Terre Haute, pet owners who already have pets scheduled for surgery “are strongly encouraged to keep their appointment or risk losing their spot in the program,” Lorey said.

Low-income pet owners living within Terre Haute city limits can still apply to the program, although nearly half the city’s $25,000 funding has been allocated, Lorey said. So far, 271 animals have been spayed or neutered for pet owners who live in the city limits.

Project HOPE (Halting the Overpopulation of Pets without Euthanasia) started in 2007 with a grant from the Wabash Valley Community Foundation as well as support from the city and county.
