Driver injured in I-70 crash caused when dog runs into traffic

TERRE HAUTE — A driver from Cloverdale was injured this morning in a crash on Interstate 70 after she tried to avoid a hitting dog that had strayed onto the roadway.

Shortly before 9:30 a.m., Peggy St-John, 52, was eastbound in a passenger car near the 51 mile marker in Morgan County when a dog ran onto the interstate. She abruptly applied her brakes and her vehicle reportedly came to a near stop, according to Indiana State Police. The vehicle was then rear-ended by a Freightliner tractor driven by Douglas E. Phillips, 52, of West Terre Haute. The tractor was pulling an empty grain trailer with the combination owned by Graham Feed of Terre Haute.

St-John was transported by Putnam County Operation Life to St. Vincent South in Indianapolis due to neck injuries. Phillips was not injured. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor and no citations were issued. The dog was struck and killed during the crash.
