Gibault runaways in custody after alleged crime spree

TERRE HAUTE — Three juveniles, reported as missing from Gibault Children’s Services on Friday, were arrested Sunday on seven charges after they allegedly struck a woman in an attempt to steal her car.

The teenagers, two 15-year-olds and a 13-year-old, were arrested Sunday afternoon after a brief foot pursuit near U.S. 41 and McAllister Lane, behind Olive Garden, said Chief Deputy Clark Cottom of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department.

“We were fortunate as we had police cars in the right place at the right time. We had three cars out in that area because they were looking” for the juveniles.

Police were first called about 4:47 a.m. Sunday to the Walmart on South U.S. 41, where a woman had been battered by three suspects when she got out of her car in the parking lot.

Police said the juveniles sought the victim’s car keys, but when she refused, the victim was struck with what was thought to be a bottle.

The juveniles initially avoided police after that incident, Cottom said.

The three later went into the Honey Creek Mall, where they allegedly stole a purse from a woman who had been distracted while trying on shoes at a store, Cottom said. The trio took money and a set of car keys, discarding the purse in the mall parking lot.

Police later captured the teenagers after they were spotted walking toward a fast-food restaurant.

Cottom said the juveniles were arrested for theft, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, runaway, attempted armed robbery, attempted car theft and aggregated battery.
