3 youths arrested after reports of assault, theft

TERRE HAUTE — Three teens believed to have “walked away” from the Gibault school were in police custody Sunday after allegedly attacking a woman in the southside Walmart parking lot.

The three are facing allegations they attacked a Walmart employee as she attempted to walk from her vehicle into the store to report for work about 5 a.m. Sunday morning. The three are accused of demanding the woman’s car keys before striking her on the head.

The woman was transported to Union Hospital where she was treated and released Sunday.

The woman told police one of the youths told her to hand over her car keys. When she refused, he allegedly again demanded the keys saying he would hit her on the head with a bottle if she did not give him the keys. She again refused and was struck while walking away, she told police.

The incident was captured by Walmart surveillance cameras.

Police searched the area but were not able to find the juveniles. Later Sunday, police apprehended the youths after someone reported three juveniles in the area of U.S. 41 South and McAllister Lane.

The youths are facing preliminary allegations of attempted armed robbery, attempted carjacking, aggravated battery and resisting arrest. They are also suspects in a purse theft that took place mid-day Sunday in the Honey Creek Mall. Items reportedly stolen in that incident were found in their possession, Cottom said.

The youths, ages 13, 15 and 15, are not from the Terre Haute area. Their parents were summoned to be present during police questioning Sunday as is required by law, Cottom said.

The suspects names are not being released at this time because they are juveniles.
