A taste, a toast for a cure

Fundraiser for breast cancer sells out

TERRE HAUTE — Sour grapes turned sweet Thursday evening as local activists tasted and toasted their support for a cure.

“Incredible. Amazing. Fantastic. All those adjectives,” Gwen Hicks, president of the Wabash Valley Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure said inside the Ohio Building that evening.

The organization hosted its inaugural wine tasting fund raiser, “A Taste, A Toast, A Cure,” from 7 to 10 p.m. to a surprising start.

“We sold out,” said Patti Wiley, grants administrator with the group, noting all 500 tickets to the wine tasting were gone well in advance. The tickets cost $15 each and the organization hoped to raise $15,000 before the evening’s end. “As much as we can,” she said.

In addition to the sale of tickets, participants were able to purchase wine at the event, with 25 percent of the proceeds going to charity.

Gwen explained that the idea for the program came from Bob Baesler.

Reggie McConnell, wine consultant for Baesler’s Market, explained the store leased out the Ohio Building for the evening and provided the food. Beverages were provided by local distributors, with 154 bottles of wine represented there.

“We have everything from the very affordable to the very expensive,” he said. Products ranged from the Frescobaldi Brunello di Montalcino, a case of which cost $680, down to Lotus 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon for $60 a case.

McConnell credited Baesler’s store manager Brian Reece for building up their alcohol business, which now features 220 beers and 500 wines.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Saturday marks the 14th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure through downtown Terre Haute. Many of the organizers who attended the lighting of the pink ribbons atop the Vigo County Courthouse were also at the wine tasting, as they noted that registered participants has already exceeded 2,600, which is more than last year’s.
