CASA candlelight vigil set Tuesday

TERRE HAUTE — Those concerned about abused and neglected children in the community are invited to a candlelight vigil Tuesday evening on the steps of the Vigo County Courthouse.

Court Appointed Special Advocates — better known as Vigo County CASA — is staging its second annual candlelight vigil at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to shine a light on vulnerable children in the area. The candlelight vigil should conclude by 8 p.m.

Keynote speakers include Sue Anderson, a child advocate who will share how child abuse and neglect has affected her personally.

Other speakers will include Pam Connelly, director of the Vigo County office of the Indiana Department of Child Services, Nikki Fuhrmeister, director of Vigo County CASA and Vigo County juvenile and family court magistrate Dan Kelly.

Last year, Vigo County CASA worked with more than 300 children who have found themselves involved in the child welfare system. CASA volunteers attend court hearings and make sure the child’s family is connected with appropriate services to build healthy family relationships.

“We act as their voice in the courtroom,” said Rachel Carl, a Vigo County CASA volunteer.

Currently, 40 children are waiting to be assigned a CASA volunteer, Carl said. Volunteers receive 30 hours of training at no cost, she added.

“We are looking for people who are willing to step up to the challenge,” Carl said.

CASA has selected April for the vigil because this is National Child Abuse Prevention awareness month.
