March of Dimes’ March for Babies slated for Saturday

TERRE HAUTE — America’s original fundraising walk will take a few new steps this year, but officials say the cause remains the same.

The March of Dimes kicks off its annual March for Babies on Saturday, beginning and ending at Indiana State University’s Memorial Stadium, and including a new Mission Marketplace full of festivities.

Division director Nikki Simpson said this year’s route has been revised from the traditional 2-mile walk around the stadium’s track to a trek through town, along Brown and Ohio avenues with a stretch near Deming Park.

Also new this year, the event will begin and end with a celebration hosted outside the stadium. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with an opening ceremony at 9:30.

Co-chairwoman Heather Miklozek said the organization’s cause strikes close to home.

“I’ve been participating for six years,” she said. “I’m a mother of a premature baby.”

Born in 1970, the March for Babies is America’s original walk, Simpson said. Each year, volunteers across the country raise funds on behalf of babies born premature or ill. According to information provided by the organization, more than 500,000 American babies are born premature each year. In Indiana alone, the condition strikes 1 in 7. In addition to funding research, the March of Dimes also provides educational tools and support to families with premature babies.

Miklozek said her daughter, now a kindergartner, has turned out happy and healthy despite her early arrival.

“We’re a lucky family,” she said, noting many are not so fortunate. “It’s obviously something that’s very close to our hearts and family.”

Simpson said walkers and teams can sign up through Saturday morning, at which point the event begins “rain or shine.”

Last year the local walk drew 143 teams with about 1,600 participants.

“We have been up to 2,000 walkers here before,” she said, crediting the generosity of the Wabash Valley. Participants in the local walk come from the surrounding counties, as well as Illinois, she said, adding this event ranks third in the state for size, right behind Indianapolis and Lake County. “Which I think is amazing for the Wabash Valley to come together to that degree. And it’s moving for me to know that this is my community. I brag about the Wabash Valley to my peers all the time.”

The group hopes to match last year’s total of $190,000, and 168 teams have signed up already.

Individuals are welcome to donate to the cause whether they walk or not, she said, adding there is no minimum and donors are thanked for giving whatever amount with which they’re comfortable.
