State Police tighten seat belt enforcement

Putnamville — Indiana State Police will be watching for motorists who don’t wear their seat belts during special patrols over the next four weeks.

The crackdown began Friday. Troopers from the Putnamville Post will increase seatbelt patrols throughout Clay, Putnam, Parke and Sullivan counties as part of the state’s Rural Demonstration Project.

Last year on rural roads in the four counties, Clay County had one unrestrained fatality; Parke, two restrained fatalities; Putnam, one restrained and two with restraint usage unknown; and Sullivan, two unrestrained and one with restraint usage unknown.

“Our increased RDP enforcement effort is not only aimed at increasing seatbelt usage, but is a dedicated effort to remind motorists of the lifesaving value vehicle safety belts possess,” said Lt. Dan Jones, Putnamville district commander.

Twenty-four other agencies throughout the state will participate in the crackdown, which runs through May 17.

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute says 64 percent of the state’s total traffic fatalities occurred on rural roadways during 2011.

Since 2007, Indiana’s primary seat belt law has required that all passenger motor vehicle occupants, including those in pickup trucks, buckle up regardless of where they’re seated.

RDP is an annual traffic safety effort made possible through Federal Highway Safety grants administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
