Town officials in an eastern Vigo County community hope a little sacrifice now might prevent a water shortage later.
The Seelyville Water Works Department on Friday afternoon asked customers to practice voluntary conservation measures for the time being, as weather conditions remain much drier than normal.
Staff at the Seelyville Water Works Department estimated their customers number about 2,200.
According to their release, conserving is prudent given the present conditions:
“This is not to say that we have a shortage of water in the ground. That is not the case.”
“But we are concerned,” the release continued, “that usage at these continual high daily rates will reduce our storage levels too low in the case of an emergency such as fire or other event,” the release states.
Cooking and cleaning within the home are fine, according to the statement, but residents are asked to reconsider activities such as washing cars and watering lawns.
According to information provided by the National Weather Service, June’s precipitation through midnight Thursday was 0.23 inch. The normal amount for that period is 3.25 inches, with an average year-to-date total of 21.69 inches, well above the 12.53 inches which has fallen locally since January.
And the impact on groundwater seems evident as the NWS reported Friday’s Wabash River levels at 0.9 of a foot, and the Big Walnut Creek near Reelsville was at 3.13 feet.
Jake Raubauch, superintendent of the Brazil Water Works, said Friday his agency has not yet issued a request for cutbacks, but depending on water levels, they might have to as well.
“If everybody will just use their common sense about watching water usage, fix leaks as soon as possible, don’t leave hoses running, we should be okay,” he said, noting his agency will re-assess the situation Monday.
About 4,700 customers use the Brazil Water Works, in addition to 1,200 meters served by agencies which buy water from them, he said, adding their water comes from a ground well near the Big Walnut Creek.
