Winter farmers market ‘going really well’

TERRE HAUTE — The summer seems long gone as temperatures continue to fall, but inside the Clabber Girl Museum, the Downtown Terre Haute Farmers Market is going strong.

More than 100 people were streaming through the building at Wabash Avenue and Ninth Street about 11 a.m. Saturday, patronizing the inaugural season of a “winter farmers market.”

Market master Angi Hansel said Saturday marked the second market for the winter season. The market will open the first Saturday of each month inside the Clabber Girl Museum and Bake Shop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“It’s going really well,” Hansel said amid tables full of locally-grown food and products. “We’ve had a big crowd today.”

Still in its infancy, the winter market has 18 vendors from the 100-mile radius of Terre Haute, and Hansel said more might be coming. Clabber Girl is offering free vendor space as this season will serve as a test-run to determine viability, and Saturday morning’s crowd had signs pointed in the right direction, she said.

“It’s very full,” she said, noting the community seems very supportive of local growers and crafters. “A lot of people, I think, are buying Christmas gifts. I think today the most exciting thing is we still have produce. Now in January, I don’t know, but we’ll see.”

Cathy Hayden, a partner in Me & Cathy’s OK Veggie Farm in Martinsville, Ill., was among the vendors selling fresh vegetables. Greens covered her table inside the market, and she said more is on the way.

“Turnips grow really well in weather like this, and kale is a big seller,” she said, pointing to stock piles of lettuce, cauliflower and broccoli. In addition to the vegetables, Hayden passed out recipe cards explaining uses for the produce.

The Clabber Girl Bake Shop was also full of customers as holiday lights brightened the building from shiny hardwood floors to ceiling.

Diane Overpeck managed the Royer Farms table with a stock of fresh eggs, beef, pork, lamb, chicken and summer sausage.

“This is my first winter farmers market so I didn’t know what to expect,” she said, adding the Clinton farm is selling Christmas trees at its location on Indiana 63. Loading pine trees into the truck for the drive to Terre Haute seemed a bit much for Saturday morning, she laughed, but the Royers plan to keep a fresh supply of food headed this way through May.
