Bond reduction denied in abuse case

Russells also appear in court on unpaid rent

TERRE HAUTE — A bond-reduction request has been denied for a Terre Haute man arrested on suspicion of child neglect for allegedly tying up and confining children in the family home.

Judge Michael Lewis of Vigo Superior Court 6 denied a request by Larry Russell, 39, to be placed in a work-release program. An evaluation by Vigo County Community Corrections reported that Russell was not appropriate for the program.

Russell remains held in the Vigo County Jail with bail set at $100,000

in cash.

Russell and his wife, Nikki, were arrested Nov. 23 after police investigated statements made by a 17-year-old boy, who said he escaped his adoptive parents’ home on North 12th Street by breaking out a second-floor window. The teen told police that he and his siblings were tied to beds using rope and duct tape, deprived of food and beaten.

Both Larry and Nikki Russell face six counts of child neglect and five counts of criminal confinement. Nikki Russell also faces two counts of battery by bodily waste and one count of battery resulting in bodily injury for a total of 14 criminal charges.

Larry Russell has an April 22 jury trial. Nikki Russell’s trial date is set for April 29.

Meanwhile, the Russells also appeared Tuesday morning on a small claims case in Vigo Superior Court 5. The couple has been sued in an eviction proceeding by Team Realty and Linden Hill for possession of a rental home and past due rent.

The judge granted the eviction request for the home on North 12th Street where the couple resided with five children at the time of their arrest.

The children removed from the home at the time are in the custody of the Department of Child Services.
