Volunteers assemble new playground at Clinton elementary school

CLINTON — Kids in Clinton will be climbing on new swing sets come Monday morning.

About 30 members of that town gathered for a “community build” project resulting in new playground equipment at Central Elementary in Clinton, explained principal Ryan Jenkins.

“It should be ready to go by Monday,” he said, surrounded by volunteers busy carrying slides and bars.

The school and parents partnered with Sinclair Recreation for the project through a matching grant. The school contributed $18,000, which was matched dollar for dollar by the company, and volunteers provided the labor. Inside the cafeteria, teachers and parents prepared lunch and breakfast for the crew, with the goal being to have cement poured by noon.

Parent Mark Brown said his child is one of the school’s 420 students and he was happy to help assemble monkey bars that morning.

“It’s a lot of fun. A nice day and good turnout,” he said.

Perry Hollowell, chief of the Clinton Police Department, also helped assemble the equipment. His department participates in school events to help develop familiarity with the students, he said.

“It’s good to see people come together and do something for the community,” he said.
