Farmers Market has winter run inside Clabber Girl

TERRE HAUTE — On a morning resembling autumn, the Downtown Terre Haute Farmers Market continued into its winter season.

Inside the first floor of the Clabber Girl Museum and Bake Shop, dozens of vendors packed the floors with tables full of goods. Aimee Wyeth offered samples of her homemade jams and baked goods, all derived from a garden maintained by her and her mother.

“I think this year’s market is going better than last year’s,” she said, attributing that to word of mouth throughout the community. “There are definitely more vendors this year.”

Wyeth’s wares included both sweet and spicy jams made from local strawberries, plums, pears and jalepenos. The winter market’s November opening marked her second year inside, and ended her third season selling outdoors in the summer market.

The Downtown Terre Haute Farmers Market opened Nov. 3 and operates the first Saturday of each month through May, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The White Violet Center operated by the Sisters of Providence hosted a table full of greens and produce, grown on their property at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Fresh spinach was selling for $3 a bag, same as arugula. Carrots were $2 per pound, and kale $2 a bunch.

Indiana State University student Samantha Miller said she gardens at the White Violet Center as part of her AmeriCorps service. In addition to “cool weather” crops grown outside, the center has a greenhouse, she said. Saturday’s temperatures reached into the lower 60s, bringing a warm start to the first day of December.

“I like helping people,” she remarked, noting the market is fun.

Jennifer Laskowski, owner of Sweet Pea Kitchen, said she’s returning to the market after selling all summer outdoors in the Clabber Girl Marketplace. In addition to cupcakes and pies, the Brazil resident also makes kolach, a type of Polish nut bread, and kiefle, which is a walnut-filled pastry. Her business began at home serving customers at the Covered Bridge Festival in Bridgeton, she said.

“It’s lovely being inside Clabber Girl for the holidays,” she added.
