United Way details push toward goal

United Day for United Way scheduled for Jan. 18

TERRE HAUTE — The big day is approaching!

United Day for United Way, set for Jan. 18, will be the last big push for the United Way of the Wabash Valley to reach its ambitious annual campaign goal of $1.86 million.

“It’s going to be very close,” said Troy Fears, executive director of the UWWV. “We’re confident we can reach our goal. It will come down to that day.”

The UWWV will announce its campaign total at its annual meeting Feb. 4 at Hulman Center. The organization has so far collected 61 percent of the funds needed to reach the goal, Fears said Thursday at a media luncheon hosted by Beef O’Brady’s restaurant.

Lots of United Way contributions reach the not-for-profit organization at the end of the year. In addition to those donations, often from employee payroll deductions, the United Day is the last big fundraiser of the annual campaign.

The focal point for United Day is Baesler’s Market in Terre Haute, Fears said. All day on Jan. 18, local “celebrities,” including media personalities, business, education, not-for-profit and government leaders, will pump gasoline and sack groceries for tips at Baesler’s, which is at 2900 Poplar St. in Terre Haute.

The tips all go for the United Way campaign, Fears said.

Celebrity gas pumpers and sackers will be working from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on United Day. Up to 20 Wabash Valley restaurants will also be donating a portion of their sales on United Day to the UWWV. In addition, several businesses will provide donation boxes that day, Fears said.

This year, the organization is also looking for a possible additional event to replace the roof-top vigil conducted in the recent past by United Way campaign leaders and staff.

“It kind of all adds up and is a fun day,” Fears said.

The United Way of the Wabash Valley provides funding for more than 30 not-for-profit charitable organizations in Vigo, Vermillion, Sullivan, Parke and Clay counties in Indiana and Clark County in Illinois. The agency also provides funding for 68 charitable programs throughout the year serving the neediest people in the community.
