‘Hoops for Hope’ to raise funds for cancer at ISU basketball game

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State University students hope to shine a national spotlight on the issue of cancer at Saturday’s basketball game.

ISU’s matchup against nationally ranked University of New Mexico will feature the inaugural “Hoops For Hope” event to raise funds for the school’s Relay for Life team.

Doors open at 1 p.m. for a 2:05 tip-off, and students will pass out educational literature about the disease while accepting donations and selling raffle tickets. Donors will receive a chance to win the opportunity to attempt a half-court shot for prizes.

Pam Chamberlain, administrative assistant for ISU’s Business Engagement Center who is also working on an ISU degree, said the initiative is part of a class project that teaches students how to manage awareness campaigns for nonprofits. Students selected the American Cancer Society as the beneficiary of their efforts.

“You have to remember, we have students that get cancer,” Chamberlain said, adding many have parents and grandparents who have battled the disease. Raffle tickets will be sold at the door and books donated by Random House will also be sold. “We have a goal of $2,000, but I can definitely see it going past that.”

Saturday’s game against New Mexico could draw a strong crowd because of its coach, former Indiana University player Steve Alford. ISU associate athletic director John Sherman said the Lobos are ranked 23rd in one national poll and 25th in another. The Sycamores are on a four-game winning streak.

“Hopefully, the community will come out and support the American Cancer Society and the Sycamores at the same time,” Sherman said.

Chamberlain said the game will be a “Blue Out” and those attending are encouraged to wear the school colors.

“All the coaches and staff, about 30 of them, will be wearing the caregiver lapel pin from the American Cancer Society,” she said.

Rachel Romas, local coordinator for the American Cancer Society, stated in a media release that the university’s participation is greatly appreciated.

“We were thrilled the students selected our organization to support,” she stated. “We hope this will turn into an annual event.”
