Embattled ISU official resigns

TERRE HAUTE — An Indiana State University official arrested on charges of patronizing a prostitute has resigned his university position.

Last Monday, Brian Hasler resigned his duties as special assistant to ISU’s president, according to John Beacon, vice president for enrollment management, marketing and communications.

Hasler had been arrested Dec. 7 in Indianapolis on a class-A misdemeanor charge of patronizing a prostitute. He allegedly offered to pay an undercover police officer for sex acts, according to Marion County court documents.

He is scheduled to return to a Marion Superior Court Jan. 13.

Hasler was accused of offering to pay $160 for a massage and sex acts, after responding to an online ad. He responded using his ISU email account, according to court documents.

At ISU, Hasler had specialized in external relations, including as a liaison to the Indiana legislature, the Indiana congressional delegation and other local and state governmental officials.

With Hasler’s resignation, Diann McKee will handle governmental relations for the university along with her regularly assigned duties, Beacon stated in an email. McKee is ISU’s vice president for business affairs.

She will serve as ISU’s liaison to the state Legislature for the upcoming session.

McKee said Thursday that she and Teresa Exline, special assistant to the ISU president for internal relations, will cover the responsibilities Hasler had.

The 2012 Legislature is a short session that should end about mid-March, she said. It is not a budget-writing session.

Meanwhile, the university is evaluating Hasler’s former position “and how best to move forward,” McKee said.

Hasler, who began his ISU job on July 21, 2008, was being paid an annual salary of $116,159.

He is a 1980 ISU graduate. He also served in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1996 to 2004, representing a portion of Evansville.

Hasler could not be reached for comment Thursday evening.
