Sunset ends search for girl; officials plot next steps

TERRE HAUTE — The search for a missing girl was ongoing at sunset Wednesday, and officials were planning their next steps for today.

At 8 p.m., Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing said no new information was available concerning Alyssa Marie Sedletzeck, 12, and the area around Hasselberger and Howard avenues off U.S. 41 North had been thoroughly searched.

“We’re still following up,” he said that evening, explaining the multi-agency team was preparing to de-brief and plan the next step.

Earlier that afternoon, cars and emergency vehicles lined the rural roads north of Novelis as teams from local, state and federal agencies brought K9 units out to search the area. By 4:45 p.m., the process was welI underway, and Ewing said the dogs had been brought out to establish a bearing on her scent.

“From what we understand, she has never run away before,” he said, adding the department has leads on the issue, but he declined to specify.

Vigo County School Corporation Superintendent Danny Tanoos was also at the scene, explaining the schools are cooperating in the efforts, working with students and attempting to generate as much information as possible. Sedletzeck is a student at Otter Creek Middle School, he said.

Ewing credited the “good working relationship” the sheriff’s department has with the school corporation, adding agencies from all spectrums of law enforcement are involved in the effort.

Individuals with information that could help with the case are encouraged to call the sheriff’s department at 812-462-3226, the Indiana State Police Post at 1-800-742-0717 or Crime Stoppers at 812-238-STOP.
