Mom, tot escape injury in van-train crash

TERRE HAUTE — A mother and child escaped injury Friday morning when their minivan was struck by an Indiana Rail Road locomotive at a crossing on Gross Road west of Doberman Road.

Vigo County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Meng told the Tribune-Star that Jessica A. Fiscus, 26, of Paris, Ill., was driving east on Gross Road when she stopped at the rural railroad crossing, which is marked with stop signs.

Fiscus told the deputy that when she stopped she did not realize that the front of her vehicle was across the white line painted on the road to mark the stopping point for the train. She said that by the time she realized she was across the line it was too late to back up and avoid being hit.

The train struck the front of the minivan, causing it to spin off the north side of the road.

A 2-year-old boy in the vehicle was restrained in a car seat and was not injured.

“Stop signs at these crossings are there for a reason,” Meng said. “Even though trains may not come through there very often, drivers should stop to look for oncoming trains.”

Assisting Meng at the scene were members of the Honey Creek and Riley fire departments.
