Wandering dog causes accident
A dog wandered onto Interstate 70 on Monday morning, resulting in an accident that hospitalized one person.
According to an Indiana State Police accident report, a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Peggy St. John, 52, of Cloverdale, was eastbound at 9:24 a.m. in the passing lane near the 51-mile marker in Morgan County when the dog entered the roadway from the south. St. John applied her brakes and had reportedly come to a near stop when her vehicle was struck in the rear by a 2012 Freightliner tractor driven by Douglas E. Phillips, 52, of West Terre Haute, police said.
St. John was transported by Putnam County Operation Life to St. Vincent South in Indianapolis for neck injuries. Phillips was not injured. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor and no citations were issued.
The dog was struck and killed.
Chase ends with drug charges
A Terre Haute man faces numerous charges after fleeing Indiana State Police on an all-terrain vehicle over the weekend.
Indiana State Police Trooper Tim Rader was patrolling in the area of Indiana 63 near Curry Drive in southwestern Vigo County at about 8:20 p.m. Saturday when he observed an ATV traveling on Indiana 63.
Rader pursued the vehicle and found the driver, Kevin B. Maddox, 49, of Terre Haute, at 1988 West Curry Drive, police reported. As Rader approached, the driver allegedly fled on foot and was later found playing basketball in front of 7639 South Cullen Place.
According to police, during a cursory search of the South Cullen Place home’s exterior for a shirt Maddox was wearing, Rader noticed eight suspected marijuana plants growing in flower pots near the rear of the residence. A Vigo County search warrant was secured for the 7639 S. Cullen Place home and during the subsequent search, troopers found in addition to the eight marijuana plants, items commonly used for the manufacture and sale of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and weighing and packaging items commonly used in sale of marijuana.
In relation to the ATV fleeing, Maddox was preliminarily charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, a D felony; resisting law enforcement, a D felony; resisting law enforcement, an A misdemeanor; criminal mischief, an A misdemeanor, and visiting a common nuisance, a B misdemeanor. Police reported the ATV Maddox was riding as he fled was reported stolen to the Vigo County Sheriff's Office in 2011.
Maddox was incarcerated in the Vigo County Jail.
In relation to the Cullen Place residence search, Shane Theisz, 34, of Terre Haute, was preliminarily charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, a B felony; possession of precursors, a C felony; possession of anhydrous ammonia, a C felony; possession of methamphetamine, a D felony; dumping controlled substance waste, a D felony; maintaining a common nuisance, a D felony; cultivating marijuana, a D felony; possession of marijuana, a D felony; possession of a stolen motor vehicle, a D felony; illegal storage of anhydrous ammonia, an A misdemeanor, and reckless possession of paraphernalia, a B misdemeanor. Theisz was incarcerated in the Vigo County Jail.
Motorcycle chase ends in crash
A Farmersburg man was arrested Saturday after leading police on a chase during which the fleeing motorcycle reportedly reached speeds of 140 miles an hour.
At about 10:30 p.m., Vigo County Sheriff's Deputy John Davis attempted to stop a southbound motorcycle on U.S. 41 near Maple Avenue for traveling at 100 mph. The motorcycle continued south, eventually turning west onto Hulman Street, south onto Indiana 63, south on Trueblood Place, and west on Sutliff Drive before crashing near Morgan Place.
Samuel D. Drake, 28, of Farmersburg, was taken into custody by Indiana State Police Trooper Don Curtis, who had joined in the pursuit, as Davis and ISP Trooper David Petrowski arrived to assist.
The black 2009 Yamaha motorcycle involved in the chase had been reported stolen to the Edgar County, Ill., Sheriff's Office.
Drake was preliminarily charged with resisting law enforcement, a D felony; driving while intoxicated (prior), a D felony; possession of stolen property, a D felony, and reckless driving, an A misdemeanor. Drake was incarcerated in the Vigo County Jail.
