Board OKs $5.4M in work at schools

DeVaney gets new classrooms, computer lab

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County School Board has approved borrowing $5.4 million for an expansion of DeVaney Elementary School and energy-related projects at 15 other schools.

At its meeting Monday night in the school corporation’s headquarters, the seven-person board approved without opposition issuing $5.4 million in general obligation bonds to cover the expenses.

About $2 million of the funds will be used to build a new computer lab and four new classrooms at DeVaney, said Frank Fennell II, director of facilities, support and transportation for the school corporation.

The new classrooms are needed because DeVaney is too small for its student enrollment, Fennell said. The additional computer lab is needed to meet testing requirements, he said.

The remaining funds – about $3.4 million – will allow the corporation to finish its conversion to digital temperature-control equipment at its schools. The new equipment will result in energy savings by allowing for more efficient temperature regulation, Fennell said.

The board also approved spending $1.1 million to continue roofing improvements at Terre Haute North and South Vigo high schools.

There are about seven acres of total roof space at the two schools, said Dan Tanoos, superintendent of Vigo County Schools. Because of the high cost of repairs, those roofs are repaired in large sections over a period of years, not all at once, Fennell said.

Because the roofing lasts 15 to 20 years, and because the work has been done in sections over a period of several years, it is likely the corporation will have only a few years without any work being necessary on the roofs, Fennell told the board.

“My projection is that we would be able to complete work on the roofs at North and South for a small period of time in the next three to five years,” Fennell said. “Then you’re going to start all over again” on the sections that were repaired 10 or 12 years ago, he said.

Also Monday evening, the “Little Steppers” from Ouabache Elementary School performed some step aerobics for the board and others at the meeting. Under the direction of Ernie Thompson, the “Little Steppers” performed to Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely” and “I’m Every Woman” by the late Whitney Houston. They also were joined by faculty and staff members for a third routine.

Thompson voluntarily conducts a health and wellness program at Ouabache every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.
