UPDATE: Marshall, Ill., school bus driver involved in accident dies; cause appears to be cardiac-related

CLARK COUNTY, ILL. — A Marshall, Ill., school bus driver involved in an accident Thursday morning has died and the cause of death appears to be cardiac-related, according to Vigo County Coroner Dr. Roland Kohr.

The school bus driver was pronounced dead at Union Hospital, said Kohr, who later performed an autopsy.

Clark County officials who responded to the school bus accident said it may have been caused by a medical complication.

Twenty-three students were on the bus, and injuries were limited to bumps and bruises, according to the school district officials and a spokesman with the Clark County Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating.

The students were in grades elementary through high school. The accident occurred about 7:45 a.m. (CST).

The bus driver was transported by ambulance to Union.

The accident occurred on U.S. 40 about one-half mile east of Marshall. The bus, which was westbound, ran off the road into a ditch, but it remained upright.

The students, who attend Marshall Community Schools, were uninjured except for bumps and bruises, Superintendent Rick Manuell said late Thursday morning. “We’re very fortunate with the students,” he said.

When interview Thursday morning, he did not know the driver’s condition.

All 23 students were taken to North Elementary School, where they were checked out by school nurses. Also, three counselors were at the scene if students needed to talk with them, Manuell said.

All parents were contacted and a few of the students went home, while others were taken to their regular schools.

He also praised all emergency service personnel at the scene.

“We had an awful lot of help out there,” Manuell said. Those responding included Marshall police, Illinois State Police and Clark County law enforcement, as well as the ambulance service.
