Toddler found roaming city street; mother arrested

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute woman faces charges of child neglect and drug possession after her toddler daughter was found roaming a city street on Tuesday.

Heather Montgomery, 25, reportedly had marijuana and 11 Xanax tablets in her purse when Terre Haute police found her passed out in a car in the 1900 block of Ash Street.

Detective Rick Decker told Judge Michael Lewis that police received a call about 11:47 a.m. that a small child had been found wandering in the 2000 block of Ash. An officer responding to the scene noticed a parked car with a passenger side door open and found Montgomery in the front seat passed out and asleep. When awakened by police, Montgomery said she had a child with her, but the child was not in the car. A woman up the street had found the child and was going door-to-door looking for her home.

Police said the child was not wearing shoes but was wearing a dirty diaper. The toddler was taken by Child Protective Services.

Montgomery was arrested for neglect of a dependent and possession of a controlled substance, both class-D felonies, and possession of marijuana, a class-A misdemeanor.

Lewis set her bail at $15,000 with no 10 percent allowed, and no contact with the juvenile. Her next court date is Monday in Division 6 at 1:30 p.m.
