UPDATE: Red Cross sheltering Garfield Tower evacuees following fire

TERRE HAUTE — Representatives from Vigo County Emergency Management, ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) and the American Red Cross were participating in a training session at the Wabash Valley Red Cross building Thursday night when the call came that there was a major fire at Garfield Towers.

The Red Cross immediately mobilized volunteers and supplies and in cooperation with the Vigo County School Corp. opened an emergency shelter for evacuees at Terre Haute North Vigo High School.

Approximately 120 people were transported to the shelter. From there, many were able to connect with family and friends and did not require overnight stays. Thirty people spent the night at the shelter, according to a news release issued this morning by the Red Cross.

Evacuees at the shelter were provided snacks, cots, blankets, personal hygiene items and replacement of critical medications. Throughout the evening, 150 snacks were served and 50 blankets were given to the shelter residents.

The shelter will remain open until all residents have either returned to Garfield Towers or are moved to other longer term housing. Shelter residents will continue to receive meals and snacks throughout their stay.
