Baesler’s Angells

Terre Haute-based business Baesler’s Market purchases Angell’s grocery stores in Sullivan, Linton

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute-based Baesler’s Market will soon be serving customers in Sullivan and Greene counties.

Baesler’s, a family-owned Terre Haute grocery business, has purchased two Angell’s grocery stores, one in the town of Sullivan and the other in Linton.

Due to a lack of population growth and the presence of big-box grocery stores, “there have not been too many opportunities for an independent retailer to expand in the last few years,” said Bob Baesler, owner of Baesler’s Market. When Angell’s became available, “it seemed to make sense” to expand, he said.

“They are both very nice stores,” Baesler said Wednesday. “I’ve always thought Sullivan and Linton are nice communities.”

Baesler’s Market employs about 220 people at its 36,000-square-foot facility on east Poplar Street in Terre Haute. The two Angell’s Food Centers, both of which are about 28,000 square feet, employ a total of 140.

Eventually, the two Angell’s stores will be renamed “Baesler’s Markets,” Baesler said. There are no plans to cut the number of employees at the Angell’s stores. In fact, “to do some of the things we want to do, I think we’re going to need to add some employees.”

Baesler’s Market in Terre Haute is open 24 hours. Presently, the Angell’s Food Centers are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Baesler said, adding “our hopes are at some point to be 24-hours, but that would be down the road.”

No major changes in products are planned at either new store location, Baesler said, adding that the Sullivan and Linton stores currently carry certified Angus Beef as does Baesler’s in Terre Haute. Boar’s Head Brand meats and cheeses, currently available in Terre Haute, will soon become available in the new stores, he said.

Two current employees of Baesler’s Market with past experience at Angell’s will be taking over the management positions at the Sullivan and Linton stores, Baesler said. Dave Evans, a resident of Linton, will be managing the Linton grocery while Mark and Deb Gilbert will we managing the store in Sullivan, he said.

Baesler’s Market operated a grocery store in Sullivan from 1973 to 1984. The Baesler family also operated a small grocery store on South 25th Street in Terre Haute until 2000 when it moved to its larger, current location. The family also operated convenience stores at different times in Terre Haute.
