Police: Driver crashes while fleeing

TERRE HAUTE — A Decatur, Ill., man was flown to an Indianapolis hospital Tuesday night after wrecking his vehicle on Interstate 70 while, police say, he was fleeing officers at high speeds.

Police said Cameron Aue, 28, began to flee them in Clark County, Ill., after they responded to a report of an erratic driver speeding on U.S. 40. Police spotted Aue at the intersection of Livingston and Cork roads in Edgar County, said Vigo County Chief Deputy Sheriff Clark Cottom.

Cottom said a chase between police and Aue reached speeds in excess of 106 miles an hour in Illinois.

Cottom said Aue left U.S. 40 and got onto Interstate 70 at the first interchange west of the Illinois-Indiana state line.

West Terre Haute Police Officer Ted York said he saw Aue’s red Ford Contour “come across Interstate 70 going about 90 miles per hour” when he began a pursuit about 7:45 p.m. The driver lost control going through barriers on the eastbound lane, which is closed for construction, York said. The vehicle rolled at least four times.

It took the Sugar Creek Fire and Rescue Department about 20 minutes to remove Aue from the vehicle. He was taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital and then flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

York said Aue may face charges in Indiana. Aue’s condition was unknown as of press time.
