Kids get the chance to explore, create at Camp Invention

TERRE HAUTE — Camp Invention is returning to Indiana State University this summer.

At the camp, children engage in hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics and discover their innate creativity and inventiveness.

The weeklong day program for students entering grades one through six is returning to ISU’s Bayh College of Education for the ninth year in a row.

Camp Invention will be under the direction of Tim Moss, a second-grade teacher from Dixie Bee Elementary, and Patricia Wheeler, a professor in ISU’s elementary education department. Both have been involved with the program for the past nine years.

With great focus on standardized testing, the regular school year tends to focus on reading, writing and math, Moss said. Camp Invention gives students “an opportunity to get excited about science and technology” through hands-on learning and problem-solving, he said.

There will be two sessions in July. The Create program will run from July 9 to 13, and the Envision program from July 16 to 20.

The price for one week is $215, and scholarship assistance is available through a $6,000 grant funded by Duke Energy.

To receive a scholarship application or to register for Camp Invention, contact Moss at t81@aol.com or call him at (812) 201-7993.

Those interested can find out more about the program at www.campinvention.org or by calling (800) 968-4332.

The student inventors will share their inventions and what they’ve learned on the Fridays of each camp (July 13 and July 20) at an Inventor’s Showcase. The community is invited to attend.

The community also is invited to donate recycled items or old appliances for campers to take apart. Contact Moss for a list of items.

Camp Invention is a program of Invent Now Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering invention and creativity. It was created in partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
