Another Gibault walkaway sparks renewed safety concerns

TERRE HAUTE — A Gibault Children’s Services runaway was transported to the Vigo County Juvenile Center this morning after a Richland Manor resident reported the youth was trespassing on the family’s property.

Indiana State Police and the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department responded, and state police transported the youth to the Juvenile Center.

The home belongs to Kelly and Steve Nasser.

According to Kelly Nasser, the female youth looked inside locked family vehicles parked on a driveway and also went around the side of the house and looked at the backyard through a fence. The youth told a Nasser family member she was “just checking out the house,” Kelly Nasser said.

The latest incident is prompting renewed concerns by the Nassers and other residents, who are calling upon Gibault to improve security measures.

“We’re afraid,” said Kelly Nasser. “Clearly something needs to be done.”

Residents cite frequent Gibault walkways as well as violent incidents that have occurred  in the community.

In the most recent violent incident June 10, three Gibault walkaways were taken into police custody after allegedly attacking a woman in the southside Walmart parking lot. Last October, there was a violent carjacking and fatal car wreck involving Gibault youth.

Richland Manor residents fear there may be more violent acts and they are at risk, Nasser said. When Gibault youth walk away, “This is where they tend to come first,” she said. Richland Manor is a housing subdivision located southwest of Gibault.

A meeting has been set up for Thursday morning that will involve representatives of southside homeowners associations, law enforcement and Vigo County School Corp. representatives, said Kal Ellis, president of the Richland Manor Homeowners Association.

The meeting will be conducted at the school district administration building. Honey Creek Middle School is located across the street from Gibault.

Indiana State Police, which transported the youth to the Juvenile Center, also are concerned about safety issues related to Gibault residents, said Sgt. Joe Watts, public information officer.

“We are concerned about the people who live and walk around that area” and the potential for other violent incidents to occur, he said.
