Democratic National Convention lacks suspense but not excitement

TERRE HAUTE — Unlike in Denver four years ago, Democratic delegates attending the party’s national convention in Charlotte, N.C., already know their choice in November — President Barack Obama, said Bionca Gambill of Vigo County.

“There is less suspense and drama. At Denver four years ago, there were still things that could have happened with designated delegates for Hillary Clinton and delegates for Barack Obama,” Gambill said. “If those Hillary delegates had not given their votes to Barack Obama, there would have been voting from the floor.”

Obama is scheduled to speak at and accept the presidential nomination at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night.

Gambill is a delegate representing Indiana’s 8th Congressional District and is among 105 Indiana delegates at the DNC.

“There is a lot of energy and excitement here,” she said in a telephone interview Monday, while waiting in a line to have an official convention poster signed by the creating artist. “People are excited to be amongst Democrats and happy to be a Democrat,” she said.

Gambill arrived in Charlotte about 4 p.m. Sunday and on Monday participated with the building of a house for a military veteran. Corporate sponsors such as Craftsman, Sears and Bank of America plus nonprofits such as Heroes at Home and Rebuilding Together have coordinated the project with Democrats and Republicans.

Half of the 1,670-square foot house was built at the Republican National Convention. The second half at the DNC.

“Our half is better,” Gambill quipped, adding she helped paint the home. Each state got 45 minutes to work on the structure, meaning each team from Indiana got about 15 minutes to paint or do other work, Gambill said.

Gambill said she will participate in three party caucuses this week — a women’s, a rural and a Jewish caucus. “I am not Jewish,  but I want to be educated and see if there are some tools they are conveying to the Jewish demographics that I can use as well. We are all here to educate ourselves on the party platform.

“I am on a mission here to take back the tools I can to better convey the message of the successes of this administration. You can’t dig a hole for eight years and expect to get out of it in three and a half years,” Gambill said. “I think there will be a concerted effort to show how we are better off than four years ago and what [the president] will do to move [the country] forward.”
