Fundraiser aims to help women get mammograms

TERRE HAUTE — When it comes to a battle with breast cancer, there’s nothing wrong with fighting like a girl.

In spite of dreary skies and misting rain, the family of Lisa Holt hosted the “Fight Like A Girl” fundraiser Sunday afternoon at the VFW Park outside Riley. Raffles, door prizes and a chili cookoff ran beneath the park’s shelter as two live bands played.

Holt’s daughter-in-law, Tiffanie Neice, said foul weather or not, the party was under way.

“We’re not going to let the rain get us down,” she said, wearing one of the family’s “Fight Like A Girl” T-shirts.

Other shirts and signs throughout the complex read “Nana’s Fight Club,” and organizers said funds raised would go toward the Clara Fairbanks Center for Women in Terre Haute.

Holt, who turned 50 in July, was diagnosed with breast cancer in January. After surgery in February and 30 rounds of radiation, she said she’s free of the disease at present.

“They found it just in time,” she said, emphasizing the importance of having mammograms. “That’s why it’s important to go and have that done.”

The grandmother of seven said cancer runs in her family, and her sister, Myrna Lynch, is also a survivor.

Lynch also credited mammograms as being key to catching the disease early in its development.

“I do believe in those because that’s how mine was found,” she said.

Neice said the family wants to raise money for the Clara Fairbanks Center as that organization helps provide mammograms for the poor and those without insurance.

“There’s so many women who can’t afford it,” she said. “We wanted to do something to help out.”
