TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute swimmer Evan Austin is “totally pumped” for his next event at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.
On Thursday, Austin, a 2011 graduate of Terre Haute South Vigo, just missed qualifying for the final heat in his first event, the men’s 100 meter butterfly. His time of 1:08 was about 2 seconds shy of making the top eight and qualifying for Thursday’s final heat.
Austin’s best event is the 100 meter breast stroke, in which he will compete on Saturday. He is also scheduled to race in four other events between Saturday and the end of the London games Sept. 9.
“When I spoke to him this morning, his comment was, ‘Coach, not the time I was looking for,’” said Jeff Thompson, Austin’s longtime swim coach at Terre Haute South and with the Terre Haute Torpedoes swim club. But Austin added: “I put it behind us and move on. Time for the next swim.”
On his Twitter account, Austin tweeted late Thursday London-time that he was “totally pumped for Saturday!”
After his swim Thursday morning, which was his second best time for the 100 meter butterfly, Austin tweeted that he was glad to have his first event behind him and was looking forward to his next race.
Austin, 19, just missed qualifying for the 2008 U.S. Paralympic swim team. Just 15 at the time, he learned from that experience and was able to qualify this time around becoming one of 14 members of the 2012 Team USA.
“He’s a level-headed guy,” Thompson said. “He gets it. He’s not there by accident. He’s there because he’s got a good head on his shoulders.”
In addition to Saturday’s breast stoke competition, Austin is set to compete in a men’s 4 x 100 freestyle relay on Sunday, a 200m individual medley event Wednesday and the 100 meter freestyle and a 4 x 100 medley relay later next week.
“Evan can’t lose no matter what he does,” Thompson said. “Look where he is. There are no losers over there.”
Thompson, a teacher and coach at Terre Haute South, was not able to join Austin in London, but Team USA has its own coaching staff. Austin is accompanied in London by his parents, an older brother and two other family members.
In his tweet late Thursday, Austin said he was “so glad to get to see my family tonight!”
All of the athletes in the Paralympics have some form of disability, from blindness to the absence of limbs. In Austin’s case, his leg muscles have not developed below his knee, meaning he is unable to kick properly while swimming. A strong upper body and excellent technique allow him to make up for the disability.
“What he’s done is fantastic,” Thompson said of Austin’s time in the butterfly Thursday. “He just wants his cake and eat it, too. And that’s what makes him so good.”
