Passenger killed in single vehicle crash

A woman passenger died in a single-car crash late Sunday on Old U.S. 41 just north of the Knox-Sullivan county line.

Shanda Soltermann, 28, of Oaktown, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her husband, Billy Soltermann, 30, sustained facial, leg and internal injuries. He was the driver of the 2006 Dodge Charger.

Indiana State Police Trooper Tyler VanNess investigated the crash and reported that the car was northbound at a high rate of speed when it left the east side of the road for an unknown reason. The car went about 200 feet before striking a tree head-on.

Police report that seatbelts may not have been used, and alcohol consumption may be a factor in the crash.

The driver was taken to Sullivan County Community Hospital for treatment of his injuries, and may be transferred to another healthcare facility for additional treatment.

The investigation is ongoing and the report will be submitted to the Sullivan County Prosecutor’s Office for review of any potential charges.

Assisting Trooper VanNess at the scene were ISP Trooper Mike Taylor, Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, Sullivan County Coroner’s Office, Sullivan County EMS, and Haddon Township Fire/Rescue.
