Passerby helps free trapped East Glenn man

TERRE HAUTE — An alert passerby rescued an East Glenn man who had been trapped for about 40 minutes between a door of his shortbed pickup truck and his garage door framework Tuesday morning, according to an Indiana State Police news release.

Harry Cruse Jr., 71, of the 8000 block of East U.S. 40, was treated and released from Union Hospital.

ISP said that Terre Haute resident Bob Miller, an employee of Paitson Brothers on his way to a service call, was driving by on U.S. 40,  just east of Chamberlain Street, and noticed Cruse in distress. Miller quickly pulled into the driveway, drove Cruse’s pickup forward and freed Cruse just moments before arrival of emergency responders.

Police said Cruse thought he had put his truck in park when he got out but instead it was still in reverse. As the truck backed, it pinned Cruse’s upper left leg against the frame.

The accident occurred at about 8 a.m., but Cruse said he could not connect with 911 on his cell phone, but was able to reach his wife’s place of employment at about 8:40, and they called 911, police said.

Indiana State Police troopers, Seelyville Fire/Rescue and Trans Care Ambulance Service were dispatched to the house to help Cruse.
