Sullivan police investigating attempted abduction of two girls

SULLIVAN — Sullivan police are still investigating what they are calling an attempted abduction of two 9-year-old girls that occurred on Friday.

The girls were walking in the 1100 block of North State Street on their way home when a man, described as a while male, with white mustache and white hair, “popped the hood on a 1980s model Mercury Cougar and asked if they would help him fix the car,” Sullivan Police Chief Jessie Morin said.

Morin said the man then attempted to lure them into the vehicle, but the girls fled.

The vehicle had two license plates, one on the front and one on the rear of the vehicle; however, Morin said police do not know if both are state-issued plates. “One could have been just a personalized vanity type plate on the front of the car, we don’t know,” Morin said.

The white vehicle has black molding, about 4 inches in width, going down the length of the car, Morin said. The vehicle had hangars across the back seat, with one containing a plaid shirt, Morin said.

Parents of one of the girls went to the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department to report the incident, where Sullivan city police were dispatched about 6:30 p.m. Friday. Sullivan City Police Sgt. David Story has interviewed both girls, Morin said.

“We are still investigating this,” Morin said. Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to contact the Sullivan Police Department at 812-268-4353 or via the department’s Facebook page at Sullivan-City PD.
