Female student arrested after bomb threat

TERRE HAUTE — A female student at Terre Haute South Vigo High School was arrested Tuesday after police said she wrote a bomb threat in a bathroom.

Terre Haute Police Chief John Plasse said the student was arrested within five minutes of discovery of the writing. She was arrested on suspicion of intimidation, a class-D felony, for making a bomb threat. “She made a poor timing choice, as we were already there working on another case and there were a lot of detectives there,” Plasse said.

The student was brought to the school office, questioned by Terre Haute police and subsequently arrested, said Dan Tanoos, superintendent of the Vigo County School Corp.

“At no time was there a threat to the school,” Tanoos said, adding it was a “a low-level threat.”

Tanoos said officials were making bathroom checks every half hour on Tuesday. Schools here saw an increased police presence this week following the deadly shooting spree Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., where 20 young children and six educators died.

“Through our checks we were informed a female student made a threat. It took five minutes to find the student because of the way our system is set up,” Tanoos said. “We narrowed it down to five females and then down to one female. She was questioned by police not more than five minutes after it occurred. We brought her father in and questioned her,” he said.

The student has been removed from the school and faces an expulsion hearing, the superintendent said.

Tanoos said the threat was not connected to the shooting at Sandy Hook, unlike a separate low-level threat, found Monday in a bathroom at South, that allegedly  referenced the shooting.

In that incident, a 17-year-old male student was arrested Tuesday and taken to the Vigo County Juvenile Center. He was arrested on suspicion of intimidation, a class-D felony.
