CLINTON —
A two-vehicle accident involving a school bus resulted in a fatality Friday morning.
According to a news release issued by the Indiana State Police, a multi-purpose school bus belonging to the South Vermillion School Corp. rear-ended a pickup truck on Indiana 163 near the intersection at Indiana 63 at 10:39 a.m., resulting in the death of truck’s driver, Elizabeth Alexander, 83, of Clinton.
The bus driver, Jennifer Short, 29, of Clinton, was reportedly cited for maintaining a speed too fast to avoid collision. Short was taken to Union Hospital of Clinton complaining of pain. There were no children on the bus or passengers in Alexander’s vehicle, according to the release.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Alexander’s vehicle was headed west on Indiana 163, but stopped to wait for eastbound traffic to clear so she could turn into a local business. According to the release, the bus failed to stop and struck the truck in the rear.
Alexander was transported to Union Hospital of Clinton where she later died from internal injuries. She was not wearing a seat belt because of a medical exemption, the release states.
The bus was taken to South Vermillion School Corp. and secured until Monday, at which time it will undergo a full inspection by the ISP, according to the release.
Personnel at Union Hospital of Clinton reported Friday evening that Short was not listed as a patient there.
