Schools surpass goal for Riley

Students raised almost $28,000 for hospital

The lives of about 5,000 children in Vigo County are touched each year by Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, and now, the Riley Children’s Foundation has been touched with gratitude by students in the Vigo County School Corp.

On Wednesday, a check for $27,828.75 was presented to Robyn Burroughs of the Riley Children’s Foundation after a districtwide campaign to reach Miracle Corp. status through Kids Caring and Sharing, a fundraising initiative focusing on philanthropic development in grades K-12.

School board members and representatives from each of 29 schools in the district, rallied in honor of North Vigo High School senior Lea Zebrowski, a patient of Riley Hospital who was chosen to serve as a 2012 Riley Champion.

Zebrowski, a 17-year-old cardiology patient, visited several county schools during the year to share her experience and promote philanthropic action among students and faculty.

To reach the status of Miracle Corp., the school district had to raise $1 per enrolled student, or about $16,000. The funds raised during the school year far outpaced that goal.

Julie Bittar, student council president at Terre Haute South Vigo High School, was recognized for organizing a Riley Dance Marathon that raised $4,000.

“Our goal was $1,900,” Bittar said. “We didn’t think we’d get it.”

Kaeleb Dusenberry, an eighth-grader at Honey Creek Middle School, was recognized for organizing a dodgeball tournament that raised close to $1,000, surpassing a goal of $850.

In that event, students could pay either $1 to participate or $1 to watch. Some donated several dollars.

At the elementary level, Trenton Williams of Rio Grande Elementary was recognized for organizing several disco events that earned close to $2,000 for Riley.

Superintendent Danny Tanoos presented the funds to Burroughs. “This is definitely a classy school corporation” she said. “I am thoroughly impressed with everything you do here.”
