Clay County soldier dies in Afghanistan

TERRE HAUTE — A 27-year-old Knightsville resident and Northview High School graduate died Monday from a rocket propelled grenade attack in Afghanistan while serving with the Indiana National Guard.

Spc. Arronn D. Fields died in Qal-ah-ye Mirza Jal while conducting a mounted patrol, the military said.

Fields deployed in January with the 381st Military Police Company, 81st Troop Command as part of Task Force Guardian, a multi-unit military police force from Indiana. He enlisted in the Guard in 2006. Fields is the Indiana Guard’s 23rd fallen soldier since 2001.

Indiana National Guard Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger said that “in the coming days, the state of Indiana, a state that owes him an un-payable debt, will learn much about his character, his sense of duty and pride. I encourage each Hoosier to take a moment today to remember Specialist Arronn Fields.”

This report was compiled from Associated Press and Indiana National Guard releases.
